Cari amici,
mentre l’estate volge alla sua conclusione, vorrei condividere con voi alcuni dei nostri sucessi dell’anno trascorso e descrivere quelli all’orizzonte. In qualità di sostenitore, sei direttamente responabile dei successi che otteniamo.

Auspichiamo che il tuo supporto non verrà meno nell’aiutarci ad affrontare le nuove sfide del 2008-2009 - stiamo lavorando infatti a tre importanti iniziative che implicano una radicale trasformazione della nostra Chiesa. Ma prima di tutto, facciamo un breve resoconto.

Come molti di voi sapranno, la raccolta fondi prima e dopo la visita di papa Benedetto è stata proficua. In poco più di una settimana abbiamo raccolto abbastanza per pubblicare un annuncio sul New York Times, e piccole pubblicità su altre testate minori per finanziare le campagne a New York e a Washington. Ne è risultato che VOTF ha guadagnato l’attenzione dei media prima della visita papale e ha ottenuto un ruolo importante in qualità di opinionista al suo arrivo. VOTF e la nostra missione, insieme alla nostra chiamata alla trasformazione della chiesa, ha acquisito spazi sui media su circa 200 canali qui e all’estero, offrendo la possibilità di conoscere VOTF a tutti coloro che non la conoscevano, così che molte persone si sono aggiunte alle nostre fila. Sono personalmente convinto che l’attenzione che abbiamo guadagnato abbia influenzato papa Benedetto tanto da costringerlo a considerare di nuovo il tema degli abusi sessuali del clero in ogni tappa del suo viaggio statunitense. La nostra voce è stata ascoltata e ha fatto la differenza!
Dopo gli annunci abbiamo iniziato una petizione, firmata da più di 8.000 cattolici, con la quale chiedevamo al papa di tradurre in azioni le parole indirizzate alle vittime, con giustizia e compassione, accertando le responsabilità dei vescovi. La visita papale, comunque, è solo parte del tutto. Ancor prima, la convention di ottobre 2007 a Providence, ha riunito centinaia di membri di VOTF. La nostra rinnovata Campagna di Responsabilizzazione ha contribuito ad elevare i concetti di "trasparenza" e "responsabilizzazione" come linguaggio comune nella chiesa e nei suoi ministri. Il lavoro trasversale dei membri di VOTF ha portato le diocesi a diffondere i dati finanziari in modo più trasparente. Il nostro tentativo di riformare la norma sullo statuto delle limitazioni riguardo gli abusi sessuali su minori ha portato grandi cambiamenti in Delaware e nel Kentucky, nonché proposte di cambiamento in dozzine di altri stati. Il lavoro a vantaggio delle vittime è stato rivolto ai termini di efficacia delle politiche di tutela dei minori nelle parrocchie e nelle diocesi. La ricerca della giustizia e della compassione per le vittime di abusi sessuali del clero continua ad essere prioritaria per VOTF. Ma dobbiamo altresì cominciare a minare la cultura clericale strisciante che permette gli abusi sessuali e consente la copertura di tali abusi. Questa priorità include tre iniziative chiave che sono critiche nell’ottica di un rinnovamento della chiesa.
La prima iniziativa è un programma già in essere: la revisione del celibato obbligatorio, che ha conseguenze importanti sui preti e sui laici. Questo piano biennale ha l’obiettivo di esaminare i benefici e le conseguenze del celibato obbligatorio, raccogliendo il sostegno dei cattolici per richiedere al Vaticano una revisione di questa norma che prevede l’obbligatorietà del celibato. E’ parte di un progetto che vuole raggiungere un criterio di integrità dei preti in esercizio. Sosteniamo questo studio per considerare anche l’attuale situazione del presbiterato - le sfide molti presbiteri affrontano, da soli, mentre le loro fila si assottigliano e la richiesta aumenta - così come stabilire cosa significa per un cattolico dover rinunciare all’Eucaristia a causa della mancanza di preti, di parrocchie, di scuole e di comunità. Possiamo essere ancora un popolo Eucaristico nel XXI secolo, quando il trend del numero di ministri attivi è in costante diminuzione?

La seconda iniziativa mira a riunire gruppi di laici in tutta l’America per costituire un sinodo di Laici. Questa è una iniziativa notevole, non solo in termini organizzativi e logistici, ma anche perché i vari gruppi hanno obiettivi a volte dissimili. Ma questo è l’obiettivo di Voice of the Faithful - dare spazio alle voci dei cattolici affinché vengano ascoltate: riunirsi nella preghiera, nel dissenso, pur rispettando le strutture spirituali differenti, facendo chiarezza sul fatto che noi, come Popolo di Dio battezzato, parleremo in nome della chiesa che tentiamo di ricostituire. Riteniamo che nessun gruppo da solo possa giungere a questo. Stiamo già portando avanti degli accordi nel vasto panorama di gruppi esistenti. VOTF si incaricherà di organizzare sessioni di pianificazione, mediante teleconferenze, sviluppando programmi di formazione che prepareranno i laici cattolici a prendere parte al progetto.
La preparazione e l’informazione sono fattori chiave per la terza grande iniziativa che verrà intrapresa nel nuovo anno: la valutazione del ruolo della donna nella Chiesa. Spinti dalla consapevolezza che il problema di genere e il clericalismo hanno contribuito al fenomeno degli abusi sessuali sui minori e alla loro copertura, chiediamo una rivisitazione del ruolo della donna nel ministero ecclesiastico. Siamo ancora all’inizio del percorso. Sappiamo già che questa iniziativa è condivisa da molti media internazionali come da diversi programmi formativi nel mondo. Dopo tutto, non possiamo discutere il ruolo della donna senza una adeguata conoscenza storica del loro ruolo nei primi anni di vita delle comunità cristiane e del successivo sviluppo. Ciascuno di questi progetti richiederà consistenti risorse, più di quante ne abbiamo raccolte finora. Per continuare nel nostro intento, per eguagliare i successi passati, per garantire il il successo delle sfide future, dobbiamo ancora contare su di voi. Per favore considerate una quota di sostegno annuale non inferiore ai 500 dollari. La vostra generosità ci aiuterà a costituire le solide fondamenta a sostegno dei programmi futuri, l’integrità del clero, e i cambiamenti strutturai nella chiesa che faranno sì che non si verifichino abusi in futuro. As summer draws to a close, I would like to share with you some of our successes this past year and describe the projects we have on the horizon. As one of our donors, you are directly responsible for the success we achieve. We hope you will continue this support and consider helping us achieve new successes in 2008-2009 - we are working towards three major new initiatives that are critical to helping transform our Church.But first, a look back. As many of you are aware, the effort to raise funds for an ad during Pope Benedict’s recent visit was a resounding success. In a little more than a week, we raised enough to place an ad in the New York Times, to place a few ads in smaller venues, and to sponsor “rolling truck” ads in New York and Washington.As a result of this effort, VOTF caught the attention of the media before the Pope arrived and positioned ourselves to be “opinion givers” and commentators when he arrived. VOTF and our mission, along with our call to Transform the Church, gained space in more than 200 media outlets here and abroad. It introduced VOTF to Catholics who did not know us before, and many of them joined our ranks.I am personally convinced that the attention our ad received also influenced Pope Benedict’s addressing the clergy abuse scandal at every stop on his U.S. itinerary. Our Voice was heard and it made a difference! We followed the ad with a petition, signed by more than 8,000 Catholics, asking the Pope to translate his words into action by treating survivors with justice and compassion while holding bishops accountable.The papal visit, however, is only part of the story. Prior to that, our October 2007 convention in Providence, R.I., drew hundreds of VOTF members. Our newly completed Accountability Campaign helped elevate the words “transparency” and “accountability” to common usage in Church governance and ministry. Work across by VOTF members led some dioceses to report finances more clearly and openly.Our efforts to reform statute-of-limitation laws concerning child sex abusers fueled changes in Delaware and Kentucky and aids ongoing reform efforts in a dozen other states. Other work to support survivors focused new attention on the effectiveness of child-safety policies in parishes and dioceses.The pursuit of justice and compassion for survivors of clergy sexual abuse, along with the protection of children, continue to be overriding concerns for VOTF. But we also must begin to address the underlying clerical culture that enables sexual abuse of children and allows the cover-up of abuses to continue.This focus includes three major initiatives which are critical if we are to inspire transformation and renewal in the Church.
The first initiative is a program already well under way: a review of the impact that mandated celibacy has on today’s priests and on us, the laity. This two-year plan aims to examine both the benefits and the drawbacks of mandated celibacy and to join with other Catholics in asking the Vatican to review its policy on requiring celibacy for the priesthood. It’s part of meeting our goal to support priests of integrity.We cast this study as a clear-eyed assessment of the current state of the priesthood-the challenges so many of today’s priests face, alone, as their ranks dwindle and demands on their time increase-as well as an assessment of what it means for Catholics to be denied the Eucharist because there are fewer priests, fewer parishes, fewer schools and communities. Can we still be a Eucharistic people in the 21st century if current trends continue to reduce the numbers of the priesthood?
The second major initiative aims to gather dozens of individuals and groups across the entire spectrum of American Catholic thought to participate in a Lay Synod. This will be a huge undertaking, not just in the planning and logistics but also in bringing together dozens of groups who pursue vastly different agendas.But that’s what Voice of the Faithful should be about-making a space for the voices of all Catholics to be heard: to rise together in prayer, to disagree respectfully on issues both spiritual and structural, to make it clear that we, the baptized People of God, will speak up for the Church we all seek to improve.We think no one group on the American landscape can mount such a meeting alone. We are already securing agreements from others to join us in the planning of this momentous event. VOTF will take the lead in setting up planning sessions, arranging teleconferences, and developing educational programs that will prepare Catholic laity to participate in the meeting.
Education and information exchange are key to a third major initiative coming into focus this new fiscal year: the examination of women’s roles within the Church. Spurred by a realization that the issues of sex, gender and clericalism inherent in Church culture all contributed to the sexual abuse of children and its cover-up, we are calling for a Church-wide re-examination of women’s roles in ministry and governance.We are in the earliest stages of planning for this effort. We already know that the planners envision a major affiliate-wide information and education program. After all, we cannot discuss women’s roles today if we lack adequate knowledge about roles in the early Church and the subsequent development of those roles.Each of these projects will demand resources beyond those we have now developed. To continue the progress made to date, to build on the successes of this past year, to capture the promises offered by our new initiatives, we must rely on you again.Please consider making a Leadership level gift or pledge this year of $500 or more.
